The Bank of Generosity

In the Circle Manifesto, if you want to have a successful business based on sustainability, create a bank account and fill it with good deeds based on generosity, fairness and integrity. Whatever your company does effects this account and to a large degree the wealth in this account determines how your company will grow in a sustainable way. This account has the potential to keep you growing strong when circumstances in the larger economic picture are going well and to ride you through the worst of times.

Several cultures have concepts that express the basic truism that gets to the heart of circle work. Native people have massive give-aways in which families make great material sacrifice, offering gifts of all manner to their communities. In doing so, community and the individual family are bound into a deeper relationship based on interdependence. Both are strengthened. When you give away, you create a void that will be filled. Ultimately, though this may seem counter intuitive to some, the giver may well become more prosperous by his sacrifice.

Many years ago I did this meditation practice where the perfect, most abundant, heavenly, jewel filled universe was visualized and offered up. It is easy to be conditioned into a poverty mentality, or a fear based greed. Doing this practice hundreds of thousands of times over months changed how I see the material world. Easterners speak of the concept of Karma, which links cause and effect. We have these concepts in the west. In the west, we reap what we sow. Or more colloquially, what goes around comes around.

The relationship between what goes in and what goes out is not always a straight and understandable line. Sometimes inexplicable events happen which shake or even destroy our world. We have free will but we are also part of a collective story; a collective spiral created by the human family. If your relationship with your community is based on generosity, you will have a better life and a stronger chance of surviving when things fall apart. You may think that the best investment for your future is in your IRA if you have one; but the other investment that may actually help you survive is in your circle of community.

In business, you launch the bank account by being as generous to your employees as you possibly can afford to be. In fact, I consider generosity toward my employees the best investment I can make in my business because it is foundational to everything else. Generosity with your internal customer, -your employees-, is foundational to your own wealth. (About Us)

The deeper satisfaction and happiness that your employees feel from working with you is directly reflected in how they treat their customers. It is directly related to the product and service you provide. Every year we have been able to afford to do so, we have given raises or an increase in our benefits package. The net effect was our employees felt deeply invested in the growth and success of the company. This has created a positive flow. A business is nothing but an exchange of energy in and out.

Studies in the Harvard Business Review[1] have born this out. In essence, the study stated that increased commitment from employees who love their job can lead to a 57% increase in an employees discretionary effort, a 20% increase in individual productivity and an 87% reduction in the desire to leave. The greatest indicator of business success is repeat business which comes from customer satisfaction. The greatest indicator of customer satisfaction is how much your employee enjoys his or her job.

In every part of our lives, we interact with the universe like a spiral, which is a three dimensional form of the circle. What we receive is related to what we put out. Human beings gather a huge amount of information psychically though few acknowledge it, let alone cultivate it. For example, you walk into a room and you’ll get a feeling. Some places feel good and have clean energy while other places do not. If we are loving, we get love back. If we are hateful, we feel the pain and alienation of being in that form of internal hell. Live by the sword, die by the sword. If we attempt to hold on to what is not ours to keep, we get stuck and stagnate, like King Minos.

A business works the same way. Energy flows in the form of revenues; energy flows out in the form of a product or service. The internal dynamic, the growth and resilience of the circle is based upon how this dynamic works. Customers sense how a business is run and they will make choices to support those that are more altruistically based. The customer wants to do business with a winner. The Bank of Generosity creates this. Over time spiral builds in strength and momentum. It attracts more business.

If the energy is negative, momentum suffers. Employees do not put their hearts into their job. Turnover may become an issue. The environment becomes more polarized and political. On some level the employee will always reflect the company; they will stop caring about the customer because the company does not care about them.

If a good structure is provided in which boundaries are clearly defined and everyone has the opportunity to do what they enjoy well, the spiral will have a positive flow. People will like coming to work. There is a feeling of looseness and joking around, even though tasks are getting done. Respect is primary. When problems arise, they are dealt with without blame.

From one perspective, the market is a giant mirror. You and your actions are reflective back whether positive or negative. However, it is easier to gain the support of the whole if you are positive. The market exists within the universe and the universe works on abundance. The earth is generous to all of us. The sun chooses to shine to warm us and give light to the plants whether we earn it or not. A business that can echo that has a great advantage.

If your relationship with your community is based on generosity, you will have a better life and a stronger chance of surviving when things fall apart. You may think that the best investment for your future is in your IRA if you have one; but the other investment that may actually help you survive is in your circle of community.

In business, you launch the bank account by being as generous to your employees as you possibly can afford to be. In fact, I consider generosity toward my employees the best investment I can make in my business because it is foundational to everything else. Generosity with your internal customer, -your employees-, is foundational to your own wealth. (About Us)

The deeper satisfaction and happiness that your employees feel from working with you is directly reflected in how they treat their customers. It is directly related to the product and service you provide. Every year we have been able to afford to do so, we have given raises or an increase in our benefits package. The net effect was our employees felt deeply invested in the growth and success of the company. This has created a positive flow. A business is nothing but an exchange of energy in and out.

Studies in the Harvard Business Review[1] have born this out. In essence, the study stated that increased commitment from employees who love their job can lead to a 57% increase in an employees discretionary effort, a 20% increase in individual productivity and an 87% reduction in the desire to leave. The greatest indicator of business success is repeat business which comes from customer satisfaction. The greatest indicator of customer satisfaction is how much your employee enjoys his or her job.

In every part of our lives, we interact with the universe like a spiral, which is a three dimensional form of the circle. What we receive is related to what we put out. Human beings gather a huge amount of information psychically though few acknowledge it, let alone cultivate it. For example, you walk into a room and you’ll get a feeling. Some places feel good and have clean energy while other places do not. If we are loving, we get love back. If we are hateful, we feel the pain and alienation of being in that form of internal hell. Live by the sword, die by the sword. If we attempt to hold on to what is not ours to keep, we get stuck and stagnate, like King Minos.

A business works the same way. Energy flows in the form of revenues; energy flows out in the form of a product or service. The internal dynamic, the growth and resilience of the circle is based upon how this dynamic works. Customers sense how a business is run and they will make choices to support those that are more altruistically based. The customer wants to do business with a winner. The Bank of Generosity creates this. Over time spiral builds in strength and momentum. It attracts more business.

If the energy is negative, momentum suffers. Employees do not put their hearts into their job. Turnover may become an issue. The environment becomes more polarized and political. On some level the employee will always reflect the company; they will stop caring about the customer because the company does not care about them.

If a good structure is provided in which boundaries are clearly defined and everyone has the opportunity to do what they enjoy well, the spiral will have a positive flow. People will like coming to work. There is a feeling of looseness and joking around, even though tasks are getting done. Respect is primary. When problems arise, they are dealt with without blame.

From one perspective, the market is a giant mirror. You and your actions are reflective back whether positive or negative. However, it is easier to gain the support of the whole if you are positive. The market exists within the universe and the universe works on abundance. The earth is generous to all of us. The sun chooses to shine to warm us and give light to the plants whether we earn it or not. A business that can echo that has a great advantage.
